London Weekend mit Jon Hiseman Tribute Concert - 1.2. bis 3.2.2019

Ankunft in London am Freitag, 1.2.2019 bei Schneefall! Am Samstag und Sonntag war es dafür wunderbar sonnig, aber kalt!
Unser prima Hotel war gerade mal 20m vom O2 Sheperds Bush Empire entfernt!

Am Samstag besuchten wir Notting Hill mit seinem Portobello Market und nachmittags waren wir im Westfield Shopping Centre in White City (bei Sheperds Bush).
Krönender Abschluss war ein wunderbarer Afternoon Tea im Hotel kurz vor dem Konzertbesuch.

Diese Show dauerte 4 Stunden und war ein unglaublich intensives Hörerlebnis. GENIAL!

Am Sonntag shoppten wir noch bei Harrods, bevor es auf Umwegen via London Bridge Station zum Gatwick Airport ging.

War ein super tolles, grandioses Wochenende in London. Danke Kathrin!!


Concert Review by Greg Pursall: Jon Hiseman Tribute - 2nd February 2019 - O2 Sheperds Bush Empire London

Lasting for nearly 4 hours, it certainly was a musical tour de force, covering all aspects of great music Jon Hiseman had been involved in for 50 years.The set was fittingly opened by Jon's daughter Ana Gracey, performing slick jazzy pop numbers from her new album ' Wicked Games ', which Hiseman had been heavily involved in production wise. Next up were Clem Clempson and Mark Clarke performing some very slick numbers from the recently formed JCM, of which Hiseman had played a pivotal role before his unexpected demise. Ace drummer Ralph Salmins had the unenviable task of taking Hiseman's place, but was more than capable of fulfilling this difficult role. ' The Kettle ' ' Four Day Creep ', ' Weird of Hermiston ' and a jaw dropping version of ' The Inquisition ' were top notch.

After a short break, the National Youth Jazz Orchestra performed some great material from Jon's wife Barbara Thompson, during her time with her jazz band ' Paraphernalia ', accompanied by original members Peter Lemer ( keys ), Billy Thompson ( violin ) and Dave Ball ( bass ). Tracks ' Breathless ' and ' Sax Rap ' were particularly impressive. ' Sax Rap ' was performed in cinque with a musical video made some years ago featuring Barbara Thompson and Jon Hiseman, and was faultless in its execution. Following a brief video introduction by Andrew Lloyd-Webber, there was a a performance of Theme from Paganini's Variations, featuring Rachel Lander on viola and Don Airey keys, which Jon had recorded way back in 1979 with members of Colosseum 2.
Next up was Pete Brown who performed a couple of numbers , and was particularly good on Jack Bruce's ' Morning Story ' which was often featured in Colosseum's set list back in the day. Time was now running out, so special guest appearances of original Colosseum members James Litherland
(guitar ) and Tony Reeves (bass) to play some vintage Colosseum material was most welcome. First up though, was John Mayall's ' No Reply ' from his ' Bare Wires ' album recorded in 68 with Hiseman and other Colosseum members before forming the band in 69. James Litherland then performed a superb version of his own self penned number ' Elegy ', before being joined on stage by legendary vocalist Chris Farlowe for some classic Colosseum performances - 'Theme From An Imaginary Western ' and 'Walking In The Park ' - as well as ' Blues To Music ' accompanied by Ana Gracey.

Finally, the video of Jon Hiseman's full drum solo from the Colonia reunion concert in the 90s was played loud and proud in the now darkened theatre before the rest of the band crashed spectacularly into ' Lost Angeles ' as a fitting finale. After a brief pause, the band returned for an encore of ' Stormy Monday Blues ' and it was finally all over.So a most memorable evening indeed, and a fitting tribute to Jon Hiseman and his legacy.
